This gorgeous glass bowl is designed with softly ridged external vertical domed columns and a smooth interior. There is a dome on the inside bottom of the bowl which enhances the starburst on the bottom of the glass.
Eight (8) bow-tied floral garland Repousse (pressed silver) festoons are attached to a sterling silver dotted serpentine design around the rim, accentuating the Art Nouveau style of the secessionist period in which the bowl was made. This beautiful example of secessionist period glass and metal artistry is substantially constructed for use as a serving dish or a decorative accessory. The Secessionist Period of art history refers to the separation of modernist artists from traditionally schooled art to more decorative and symbolic styles, Art Nouveau. France led the succession in the late 1880s - early 1890s. The German succession began in Munich in 1892 and then to Austria where the Vienna Secession formed in 1897.The movement continued in both art and literature into the first two decades of the 19th century. 4 diameter at the rim. There are two maker marks on the exterior rim, two festoons apart. The markings are difficult to decipher because they were stamped over the decorative dotted serpentine stamped into the exterior rim.
Under 30x magnification, in one mark I see the French symbol for Paris, France. The mark depicts a side-view face of a person with headwear that is plumed on top and down the nape. The profile sets in a vertically elongated octagon with short corners and long sides. This profile and stamp shape, indicating the city, country, and metal purity, was used from 1838 - 1873, making this piece among the earliest French Successionist pieces. The second mark appears to me as, D O?
CIE in French is equivalent to Inc. I have not been able to determine the name of the company. The bowl is gorgeous; an unusual statement piece. The glass is clear and clean. There are no chips, cracks, cloudiness or discoloration. A tool may have been used to remove the silver ring around the base, leaving the 1/8 high pedestal lightly scuffed. It appears that tools were used to remove the baseband. But is not noticeable when the bowl is empty or in use. A few bow tails are missing from the garland. The silver ring around the base is missing. The edge around pedestal is lightly scuffed where the silver rim was removed, but is not noticeable when the bowl is empty or in use. This bowl is a rare treasure representing the secession style of western Europe and the end of the 19th century.
While the condition remains Very Good, the loss of the base rim devalues it 30%. All reasonable offers will be considered.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -.
